Brevard Zoo Seeks Help Naming Giant South American Fish

Members of the public have the opportunity to help name two of Brevard Zoo’s newest inhabitants—giant fish known as arapaimas.

A poll at www.brevardzoo.org/fish-naming is open through Friday, January 17, allowing voters to choose from five pairs of names: Napo and Juma (rivers in South America), Iara and Jaci, Statler and Waldorf, Rocky and Bullwinkle, or Dyson and Hoover.

Zoo guests can visit the pair daily in Rainforest Revealed, an exhibit featuring Latin American wildlife that opened in November.

One of the largest freshwater fish species in the world, the arapaima is native to South America and can grow up to 10 feet long and weigh 440 pounds. The main threats to the species include overfishing and pollution.
