PHOTOS: Brevard Zoo Releases Two Rehabilitated Sea Turtles

Yesterday afternoon, Brevard Zoo’s Sea Turtle Healing Center returned patients Harley and Hope to the ocean in Vero Beach.

Harley, a subadult loggerhead sea turtle, was admitted to the Healing Center on July 24 after being found stranded at Jetty Park at Port Canaveral; they were anemic and had a heavy barnacle load upon intake. Juvenile green sea turtle Hope arrived at the Healing Center from Vero Beach on September 23, lethargic and with wounds on their shell. Both patients were treated with nutritional support, fluids and medication; and deemed ready for release.

All seven sea turtle species are threatened by human hunting, entanglement in fishing equipment, marine debris, shrinking beaches, pollution and climate change.
