This Week in Disney History: January 7-13

Jan. 7-13: This week marks the 85th anniversary of the Silly Symphony cartoon short, "The China Shop."

“The China Shop,” a Silly Symphony cartoon was released on Jan. 13, 1934. As a shopkeeper closes his store for the night, his china pieces come alive. Two figures, a girl and a boy dance until a china satyr runs off with the girl. The boy figure manages to save her and destroys the satyr, but also damages most of the store’s pieces. When the resourceful owner arrives the next morning, he sees all the damaged items and changes his sign to read “Antiques.”

Jan. 7
1933 – “Building a Building” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts
1943 – “The Spirit of ‘43” (film made for the U.S. Treasury Department) is delivered
1944 – “The Pelican and the Snipe” (special cartoon) debuts
1992 – “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort
2008 – Disney-MGM Studios is officially renamed Disney’s Hollywood Studios
2012 – Jolly Holiday Bakery Café officially opens in Disneyland Park

Jan. 8
2004 – Disneyland Park welcomes its 500 millionth Guest

1928 – “Harem Scarem” (Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon short) debuts
1937 – “Don Donald” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts
1976 – Disneyana Shop opens on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park
1987 – Star Tours opens at Disneyland Park

Jan. 10
1927 – “Alice the Golf Bug” (Alice Comedy) debuts
1932 – The Mickey Mouse Sunday page comic strip debuts in newspapers
1941 – “Timber” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts
2001 – Disneyland Paris welcomes its 100 millionth Guest
2003 – “You Wish!” (Disney Channel Original Movie) debuts
2008 – “The Little Mermaid” makes its Broadway debut at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater

Jan. 11
1942 – “Donald’s Decision” (film made for the National Film Board of Canada) is delivered
1990 – “Party Gras Parade” debuts at Disneyland Park
2013 – “Sofia the First” (television series) premieres on Disney Junior
2017 – Iron Man Experience opens at Hong Kong Disneyland

Jan. 12
1990 – International Gateway, a second park entrance, opens at Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort
2001 – The Downtown Disney District officially opens at the Disneyland Resort
2003 – Disney leaders preside over the groundbreaking ceremony of Hong Kong Disneyland
2007 – “Jump In!” (Disney Channel Original Movie) debuts

Jan. 13
1930 – The first Mickey Mouse comic strip appears, distributed by King Features Syndicate
1934 – “The China Shop” (Silly Symphony) debuts
1934 – “Shanghaied” (Mickey Mouse cartoon short) debuts
1939 – “Donald’s Lucky Day” (Donald Duck cartoon short) debuts
1942 – “All Together” (film for the National Film Board of Canada) is delivered
2001 – “House of Mouse” (television show) premieres on ABC
2006 – Walt Disney Pictures releases “Glory Road”
2007 – “Johnny and the Sprites” debuts on Disney Channel
2012 – “Frenimies” (Disney Channel Original Movie) debuts
