This Week in Disney History: December 17-23
There’s always a great, big, beautiful tomorrow at The Walt Disney Company, because every day is tied to a milestone in the heritage and rich history of a company that has been entertaining millions of people every year. Published every week, this interesting series features highlights from all the divisions of The Walt Disney Company. Let's see what happened this week:
Dec. 20: 50 years since Winnie the Pooh and friends were swept away on a blustery day
“Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day” was released on December 20, 1968. Based on the stories of A.A. Milne, a blustery “Winds-day” turns into a storm in the Hundred Acre Wood. Pooh and Piglet are swept up like a kite and washed away in a flood, while Owl’s house collapses. But, before the day is over, Owl finds a new home, and Pooh and Piglet become heroes.
In its most imaginative sequence, Pooh has a nightmare inhabited by fantastic creatures like Heffalumps and Woozles. Sound familiar? The animated featurette also served as an inspiration for the Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride at Magic Kingdom Park in which the rider experiences several scenes from the cartoon, including Pooh’s Heffalump and Woozle dream.
Did you know? “Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day” won the 1968 Academy Award for Best Short Subject, Cartoons. It is also the only Winnie the Pooh production to win an Academy Award.
