This Week in Disney History: February 9-15
There’s always a great, big, beautiful tomorrow at The Walt Disney Company, because every day is tied to a milestone in the heritage and rich history of a company that has been entertaining millions of people every year. Published every week, this interesting series features highlights from all the divisions of The Walt Disney Company. Let's see what happened this week:
This week: 20 years since the Philadelphia Eagles flew in “The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon”
This week in Disney history is filled with rags-to-riches stories, from the fairy tale romance of “Cinderella” to the treasure-hunting adventure of “Candleshoe.” But perhaps no Disney film is more fitting to reflect on this week than “The Wonderful World of Disney” feature film “The Garbage Picking Field Goal Kicking Philadelphia Phenomenon,” which celebrates its 20th anniversary this week. The film stars Tony Danza as Barney Gorman, a Philadelphia garbage man who gets the once-in-a-lifetime chance to serve as a placekicker for the Philadelphia Eagles. His first professional kick helps the team win the game, but in the end Barry realizes that he can still find happiness in his old garbage route. The film debuted on Feb. 15, 1998, and even featured a cameo by Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie.
