Commerson's Dolphin Passes Away at SeaWorld Orlando
SeaWorld shared some sad news today: "We are saddened to share that Betsy, a 33-year-old Commerson's dolphin, has passed away. Betsy lived at SeaWorld San Diego and was recently relocated, along with two longtime companions, to join more of their species in Orlando. The published life span for Commerson's Dolphins is up to 18 years, which Betsy far exceeded in her long life with SeaWorld (A. S. Guide to Marine Mammals, Walker’s Mammals of the World).
While exact cause of death is unknown at this time, Betsy has been under 24-hour veterinary care for the last few days as she was eating inconsistently and appeared to have a gastrointestinal issue. A necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
She was with her caretakers and two companion animals in an off-exhibit medical pool in the animal habitat at Aquatica when she died. Betsy was part of our family for more than three decades and will be greatly missed."
