Sorcerer's Hat to Be Removed from Hollywood Studios

Shout for joy, ladies and gentlemen! it looks like the Walt Disney World Resort will be making thousands of Guests and theme park fans very happy early next year as they get ready to remove the Sorcerer Mickey Hat, which has been hiding the beautiful Chinese Theater for almost 15 years at Disney's Hollywood Studios. In fact, News 13 reported earlier today that some sources confirmed that the view down Hollywood Boulevard will be restored early next year.

While rumors about the removal of the huge Sorcerer's Hat have been floating around for years (even we were given some tidbits about this matter about a year ago, which turned out to be slightly incorrect, but true), this is the first time that we hear of reports of Cast Members saying that an internal announcement was made, which included the news of the removal of the hat.

In addition to this, it seems like the entire hub of the park will be reimagined, starting from January 2015 (the project will include the removal of the hat). Will this include a permanent stage that is able to rise from the ground? This would solve the problem of having to assemble and then disassemble the temporary stage every single time there is a special event at the park. Also, it could be hidden during the day and only raised into place during the afternoon/evening hours. Of course, this is only speculation for now. We will have to wait a little more for official confirmations.

The Earful Tower will finally return as the official icon for the park, but this is just the beginning of a major, multi-year expansion project that will completely change the look of the park, and will introduce amazing new attractions, rides, shows, and experiences. Excited yet? We are.

  1. So excited for Star Wars and Pixar additions, but an entire reimagining of the park, and the removal of the hat is glorious! (They can move the hat; I like it, just not there.)

  2. This is definitely snow balling into a big announcement. The location of Jack Sparrow closing just firms up the "Pixar" conversion for this section of the park.

  3. There was rumor quite a while back that when the hat was removed, the hub would also get a re-imagining. At that time, the word was to look for another recreation of the Carthay Circle Theater (to replace the Chinese Theater). Which would see the gift shop facade at DHS change. Also the Red Car Trolley making the way over. I like the Chinese Theater and hope that's not the plans that were dusted off.

  4. This is a dream come true. Thank you to whatever higher up that finally realized that the hat was a half baked icon at best. It looks like a DCA type of remake is in the works for DHS. I was never a big fan of DCA before the makeover but now it's my second favorite park. I'm sure these future changes will bring DHS out of its slump and make it great park.

  5. Good news. I LOVE the great movie ride. This will bring a great view again. Hopefully more POSITIVE changes come and not ones like getting rid of Maelstrom.

  7. For many, the hat represented an extreme, over the top, in your face "this is Mickey's house."

Not content with guests just knowing they are at Disney's "Hollywood Studios", etc, Disney decided it needed to push the Mickey connection at every turn.

Mickey Mouse, Disney, didn't start Hollywood, and certainly was not as big in the classic era as MGM, etc. MGM Hollywood Studios was about the classic movie period. Once the MGM name was gone, Disney apparently decided that IT WAS Hollywood, and the hat represents that.

Personally I'd like to see Disney present something from its great classic, LIVE ACTION era. They made great live action family movies, still watchable, viable, today. The animation push of the later century, and the Pixar Plague, have totally obscured some great family entertainment from many generations.

  8. Great news. After the success of New Fantasyland it's about time HS got some attention! Rip it all out and start again!

  9. And what are we left with? A water tower with ears. How original! I liked the hat!

  10. I love the hat too - Hope they move it to either outside the entrance or near to Fantasmic.

On the other hand - I hate the look of the Chinese theater. So that view will be restored. Oh boy.

  11. So now we are left with a water tank with ears! How original! I liked the hat. As for the Great Movie Ride, it is so dated. There is a lot of work to do in this park!
