WDW's New Laundry Facility Update: Walls Are Up

This afternoon we have another out-of-the-ordinary construction update to share with you, which will focus on the new laundry facility that is currently under construction near Disney's All-Star Resorts. Site work continues on what will become the fourth laundry operation, affectionately named “FLO.” This new state-of-the-art location, found along Victory Way and adjacent to the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex, is anticipated to be operational in spring 2015.

By week ending August 2, a six-inch thick foundation, approximately 604 cubic yards of concrete, had been poured on the classified dock area. That same week, the rest of the shipping dock was poured. With advanced planning and paying attention to safety, the work was finished ahead of schedule and in time to see the sunrise. The original plan was to be finished after noon. The pour for the clean side work area (towel fold, flat work, and hand fold) took place August 9, 2014. That's almost exactly one month ago!

Orange electrical conduit stub-ups are strategically placed where the Jenway conveyor systems, towel folders, and ironers will be. The team uses a GPS to mark the coordinates to make sure they are in the right place.

The large amount of weight needed to hold up the roof and rail systems requires very large footings that provide strength for the building columns. Inside those columns are electrical lines that will provide power to the equipment in the area or up in the dryer mezzanine. 3D modeling really made sense of the spaghetti design.

By the last week in August, the walls began to be put into place, creating the shape of the facility. From start to finish, it took only three days to put the walls in place. It is a thing to behold, as it is almost a fourth laundry!

Fun Facts:

• The first floor building footprint will be 107,862 square feet.
• The mezzanine space will be 21,426 square feet.
• The total floor space will be 128,852 square feet.

Key Milestones (projections):

• October 2014 – Building ready to receive equipment
• January 2015 – Laundry equipment installation complete
• February 2015 – Admin area complete
• April 2015 – Facility substantially complete
