This Week in Disney History: Sept. 20-26

Sept 21, 2010 - Tinker Bell receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
Tinker Bell, the beloved Disney character who made her debut on the big screen during the 1953 animated film Peter Pan has beenbringing magic to Disney Guests for years. With appearances on both the big and small screen, it’s no wonder she has become a household name. She has been featured in television commercials, inside popular park attractions like Peter Pan’s Flight, at Disneyland, and she can also be found flying through the sky during nighttime spectaculars. Near the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard, Tinker Bell earned the honor of receiving the 2,418th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame amidst a plethora of confetti cannons and fairy dust. The ceremony coincided with the DVD release of “Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue,” the third installment in the Disney Fairies franchise. In the film, Tink teams up with an unlikely ally to keep the magic of Pixie Hollow a secret. Tinker Bell joins other Disney honorees on the Walk of Fame including Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Snow White and Winnie The Pooh.

Sept. 23, 1980 - Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opens at Magic Kingdom Park
Take a close look at the trains that race, chug and roar through the tall buttes and gold mines of Tumbleweed. You'll notice there's not an engineer aboard any of those locomotives, right? So surely, the proper thing to do is jump aboard one to experience a three-minute whir of dizzying turns, narrow clearances, rumbling earthquakes, boulder avalanches, screeching bats and goats chomping on sticks of dynamite. The town of Tumbleweed's been flooded lately, so be sure to look for Cousin Ed, who took the bathtub out for a spin ? in his pajamas. Unlike the geology of Zion National Park, which influenced the Disneyland Park original, Imagineers modeled the look of this Frontierland classic, and the versions that followed in Tokyo and Paris, after the scenery of Monument Valley in Arizona. Each member of the six-strong locomotive fleet bears an appropriately "punny" name, including "U.B. Bold" and "I.M. Fearless."
