This Week in Disney History: June 14-20

June 19, 1998 - Walt Disney Pictures releases “Mulan”
When the Huns invade China, the emperor decrees that all families must send one man to join the army. Not wanting her ailing father to go, the young Fa Mulan disguises herself as a man and sneaks away to fight in his place. When her family learns of her departure, they ask their ancestors for her protection, which arrives in the form of the family’s Great Stone Dragon - the diminutive, wise-cracking Mushu. With help from her travel-sized companion and her fellow soldiers, Mulan will bring honor to her family, and find the romance that she doubted she ever would. “Mulan” was the first film produced primarily at Walt Disney Feature Animation’s former studio at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and featured the vocal talents of Ming-Na, Eddie Murphy and Pat Morita. Disney artists soaked up inspiration during a three-week trip to China, developing a simple, watercolor-inspired production design reflective of Chinese art.

June 17, 2008 - Toy Story Midway Mania! opens at Disney California Adventure Park
Grab a pull string for a spring-loaded, 3-D shootout on the carnival midway! The stars of Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story” films are having all the fun in Andy’s room while he’s away, inviting Guests to shrink down to toy size and ride through a midway game play set. Spinning in and out of each carnival game, Guests use a spring-action virtual cannon to break plates with the Green Army Men, fire space rings with Buzz Lightyear, and blast targets with Woody and Jessie. Keep shooting and see if you can grab the highest score of the day, or at least the best in your car. Hitting certain targets cues special effects like water sprays and air blasts, and each of the five games has an “Easter egg” screen that can be unlocked for bonus points. Located in Paradise Pier, the attraction’s Victorian-inspired building was one of the first projects completed for Disney California Adventure Park’s five-year reimagining.
