We’re highlighting one movie per day that’s currently playing on Disney Family Movies. Today, turn up the American big band jazz as we present a stunning true-tale, 1Hollywood Pictures’ 1993’s Swing Kids.

In 1930’s Germany, at the height of the war, there really were a group of teenage boys and girls who loved nothing more than Swing music— and the American way of life it represented. This buried treasure of a film stars Christian Bale (later to become cinema’s most recent Batman in The Dark Knight trilogy) and Robert Sean Leonard (who would gain wide acclaim as Dr. James Wilson on FOX television’s House). The cast also features appearances by the lovely Barbara Hershey (Academy Award-nomination for Portrait of A Lady), the Shakespearean actor Kenneth Branagh (multiple Academy Award-nominations, including Henry V, Hamlet and, most recently, My Week with Marilyn), and a young Noah Wylie (NBC television’s E.R.).

It tells the story of a courageous group of young teenagers who follow their passion for swing— even as the destructive forces on World War II move in, and they confront the reality of losing one of their own. A harrowing, powerful film that not many know, Swing Kids even inspired a popular Internet meme: ‘The only movie where you can see Wilson from House and Batman swing dance. Yeah, it’s worth it.’ And while that is funny— and true— in reality this powerful movie is a perfect way to introduce your family to some serious history, all together. Watch Swing Kids on Disney Family Movies tonight, and start the conversation.
