This Week in Disney History: June 4-10

June 5, 1999 - The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh opens at Magic Kingdom Park
One blustery day in the Hundred Acre Wood, a little bear named Winnie the Pooh set off in search of honey. After soaring via balloon above his friends Piglet and Eeyore, the page turned and Pooh dozed off to sleep after bouncing with the one-and-only Tigger. Heffalumps and woozles left him very confuse-eld, but not to worry - he ended up with a smackerel of his favorite snack. Replacing Mr. Toad's Wild Ride in Fantasyland - look for two homages in Owl's house - The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh marked the first chance to experience the world of A.A. Milne's classic characters at a Disney theme park. Pooh's Hunny Hunt, a whirlwind adventure using new "trackless" technology debuted at Tokyo Disneyland in 2000, and the bear of very little brain is also at Disneyland Park in California and Hong Kong Disneyland Park. On July 15, Walt Disney Pictures' "Winnie the Pooh" welcomes moviegoers back into the Hundred Acre Wood.

June 9, 2006 - Disney-Pixar releases "Cars"
Lightning McQueen, a hot-shot rookie racecar with his eyes on winning the Piston Cup, unexpectedly winds up detained in the quiet Route 66 town of Radiator Springs en route to the championship race. As he meets the town's eclectic residents, including Sally (a flashy blue Porsche), Doc Hudson (a gruff Hudson Hornet who's hiding a secret) and the friendly tow truck Mater ("Like tuh-mater, but without the 'tuh,'") Lightning learns it's the journey in life that matters more than the destination. Inspired by a cross-country family road trip taken by director John Lasseter, the seventh full-length Pixar Animation Studios film yielded another box-office smash, with a sequel on the way. The international espionage-filled sequel "Cars 2" hits theatres nationwide June 24, and beginning in 2012, guests will be able to visit Radiator Springs for themselves when Cars Land opens at Disney California Adventure Park.
