In the planning stages for years, the expansion of Disney Cruise Line (DCL) is now a reality. On Jan. 26, the Disney Dream sailed out of Port Canaveral, Fla., on its historic maiden voyage, marking the first official cruise on the new ship.
"From our project teams at Walt Disney Imagineering and the expert shipbuilders at the Meyer Werft shipyard … to our cast and crew at Disney Cruise Line and others across Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, everyone involved has committed a tremendous amount of time, energy and creativity to this important endeavor," said Karl Holz, president, Disney Cruise Line and New Vacation Operations. "The Disney Dream is truly remarkable, quite a masterpiece if you ask me."
Nearly 4,000 people gathered at Jetty Park and waved special Mickey hands as they bid "bon voyage" to the Disney Dream as it left the port.
On the West Coast, the Disney Wonder arrived to the Port of Los Angeles Jan. 21 and is currently sailing seven-night itineraries in the Mexican Riviera.
"Although Disney Cruise Line isn't new to the Pacific, the arrival of the Disney Wonder begins a new chapter in our company's history and establishes a long-term presence for our business on the West Coast," said Tom Wolber, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Disney Cruise Line. "Even more families can now experience our beautiful ships, legendary Disney service and, most importantly, our amazing crew members."
In the summer, the Disney Wonder will reposition to Vancouver, British Columbia , and sail to Alaska, a first for Disney Cruise Line.
Of course, the expansion of Disney Cruise Line doesn't stop there. A fourth ship in the DCL fleet, the Disney Fantasy, is under construction in Germany and will sail its maiden voyage March 31, 2012.
