This Week in Disney History: Dec. 11-17

Dec. 15, 1973 -- Pirates of the Caribbean opens at Magic Kingdom Park

“Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s life for me!” Pillaging, plundering, rifling and looting scallywags made their debut at the Walt Disney World Resort in 1973. The beloved attraction originally opened at Disneyland Park in 1967, and was one of the last attractions that Walt Disney had a personal hand in bringing to life. The attractions inspired the popular “Pirates of the Caribbean” motion pictures, and in 2006, Captain Jack and Davy Jones made their debut at the attraction.

Dec. 11, 2009 -- Walt Disney Pictures releases “The Princess and the Frog”

Tiana, a hard-working waitress who dreams of opening her own restaurant, has never been one for fairy tales. But after meeting a gallivanting prince turned slimy frog, she puckers her way right into one. And from from a trombone-playing crocodile, a lovesick firefly and a blind fairy godmother, Tiana learns hard work isn’t enough - you’ve got to dig a little deeper. Helmed by “The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin” directors Ron Clements and John Musker, “The Princess and the Frog” was Disney’s first hand-drawn animated film in five years, featuring a jazzy score from Randy Newman and Tony winner Anika Noni Rose as the voice of Tiana.
