WDW's history: 20,000 leagues under the sea
Many of you will certainly know that where they're know building the new Little Mermaid dark-ride at Magic Kingdom, before was occupied by a submarine voyage, called "20,000 leagues under the sea".
It opened October 14, 1971 (with the rest of the park) and closed for good September 5, 1994, even thought the official closure was announced almost two years later, in 1996.
The Disney company said that they had to close the attraction not only because it was too expansive to maintain, but also because its hourly capacity was extremely low, causing long lines.
After its closure, only two of the vehicles were saved from the fleet, and were put in the snorkeling lagoon at Castaway Cay, Disney's private island in the Caribbean.
Unfortunately, as of 2010 only one Nautilus submarine still exists, but it has been severely damaged by a hurricane (the other submarine was completely destroyed)
The lagoon was eventually drained in 2004. Pooh's Playful Spot was built in the same place.
In 2012, however, a new Little Mermaid dark-ride will be built, returning under the sea!!
Here you are some picture of the attraction (copyrights are mentioned at the end of this article).
